故宮南院變身「沒有界線的博物館」？有讚有反
故宮南院主題重新定位為「地理大發現時代東亞地中海概念中的台灣福爾摩沙」。對此，博物館界有兩派看法。一派認為以故宮現有館藏與研究，不足以撐起新主題；另一派認為，新一代博物館是「沒有界線的博物館」，不必局限於館藏，應連結其他博物館打造新方向，南院新嘗試值得鼓勵。
故宮前院長馮明珠指出，陳水扁執政時代將故宮南院定為「亞洲藝術文化博物館」，之後改朝換代，她和上一任故宮院長周功鑫多年來不曾改變此一定位，便是認為「品牌必須延續」，「大英博物館會不斷更改定位嗎？」
馮明珠指出，「地理大發現時代的台灣福爾摩沙」此一主題，是陳水扁執政時代的博物館顯學，許多博物館包括故宮都曾辦過相關展覽，但策展和成為一個博物館主題有很大差距。
馮明珠認為，文物研究需要時間累積，故宮南院定位一改再改，將造成研究員無所適從。她擔心，以故宮北院的典藏文物、研究員與研究能量，無法撐起故宮南院的新定位；按照此一主題打造的眾多新館，也可能淪為蚊子館。
國立歷史博物館館長廖新田認為，新時代博物館是「沒有界線的博物館」，透過新科技連結其他博物館的館藏、研究，擴充展覽的範圍與方向。廖新田認為，故宮北院固守原有的中國文化路線，故宮南院則發揮讓民眾認識東亞文化、海洋文明的功能，兩者搭配平衡而巧妙。
他指出，台灣是海洋國家，卻長期忽視海洋文化與鄰國文明，希望故宮可以發揮「博物館龍頭」的氣魄，引領觀眾和其他博物館深入挖掘世界文明與海洋文化。
